Scoring 160+ in the SSC CGL Tier-I examination is no longer about solving every single math problem manually. With the increased competition and tight 60-minute window for 100 questions, success depends on question selection speed, mental approximation, and elimination techniques.
1. Quantitative Aptitude: The 25-Minute Rule
Allocate no more than 22 to 24 minutes to the Quantitative section in Tier-I. The biggest mistake aspirants make is attempting time-consuming multi-step geometric theorems or heavy arithmetic calculations in the first pass. Divide your exam into two clear phases:
- Round 1 (First 12 minutes): Attempt direct formula questions: Profit & Loss, Percentages, Trigonometric angle values, and standard algebraic identities.
- Round 2 (Next 10 minutes): Solve moderate geometry and data interpretation sets using options elimination and digital sum techniques.
“In CBT exams, knowing which questions to skip within 5 seconds is far more valuable than knowing how to solve them in 3 minutes.”
2. English Language: Vocabulary Root Etymology
Do not attempt to memorize 5,000 words from alphabetical lists. Instead, focus on Latin and Greek root words. Learning a single root such as ‘Mal’ (bad/evil) or ‘Bene’ (good/well) instantly unlocks meanings for over 30 related words in antonym and cloze test questions.
3. General Awareness: Static GK & Current Affairs Synergy
General Awareness carries 50 marks and can be completed in just 7 to 8 minutes. Focus heavily on Indian Polity (Articles 12 to 51A), modern freedom struggle timeline, and the last 8 months of sports and awards notifications.
